You install a website blocker. You add Reddit, Twitter, YouTube to the list. You start a 2-hour focus session. Fourteen minutes later, you think "I'll just check one thing" and hit the cancel button. The block lifts, you open Reddit, and the two hours are gone.
This isn't a failure of the tool — it's a feature of every blocker that includes an undo button. If future-you can cancel the block, present-you is just performing a ritual, not enforcing a boundary.
The Cancel Button Problem
Most website blockers let you end a session whenever you want. Some add a short delay — wait 10 seconds before unblocking. Others make you type a phrase. These are friction techniques, and they work for mild impulses. But for strong cravings — the kind where you've been wrestling with a hard problem for 30 minutes and your brain is screaming for dopamine — a 10-second delay is nothing.
Research on commitment devices shows that the most effective ones remove the option entirely. You can't eat junk food that isn't in the house. You can't spend money you've already transferred to a locked savings account. And you can't browse blocked sites if there's no cancel button.
Lock In!'s Strict Mode Removes the Escape
Lock In! offers a Strict Mode that, once enabled, makes the current session completely uncancellable. There's no button to end it early. There's no keyboard shortcut. There's no quit-and-relaunch workaround. You chose a duration when you started the session, and the blocks stay active for every second of it.
How It Works
When you start a session with Strict Mode on, Lock In! activates its system-level network extension to block websites in every browser, and its app blocker intercepts any blocked applications. The session timer counts down in the menu bar. During this time, the "End Session" control is gone. You can't access it. The only way out is to wait.
Start Small
If Strict Mode sounds intimidating, start with 25-minute sessions. You can survive 25 minutes without Instagram. Once that's comfortable, extend to 50 minutes, then 90. The discomfort fades quickly when you realize you actually got work done.
Your Future Self Will Thank You
Strict Mode is a deal you make with yourself: "For the next X minutes, distractions are off the table." It turns every session into genuine deep work because there's no alternative. No negotiation, no exception, no escape hatch.
