How to Control Notification Sound Volume on Mac

Mac notification sounds play at the same volume as everything else — or they're off entirely. There's no middle ground built in. Here's how to tame alert volume without silencing your music.

A Calendar reminder fires and the alert sound blasts at the same volume as the music you've been enjoying. You jump. You lower the system volume — and now your music is too quiet. macOS treats notification sounds and media audio as one volume, and the only built-in escape is enabling Do Not Disturb, which silences everything including alerts you actually need.

SoundDial — control notification sound volume independently on Mac

Why notification volume is so hard to control

macOS has a "Play sound effects through" setting and an alert volume slider in System Settings, but it controls all system alert sounds together. There's no way to say "Calendar alerts at 30%, Messages pings at 50%, Mail silent." Every alert-generating app shares the same system sound level.

The deeper issue: many apps generate their own notification sounds outside the system alert framework. Slack plays its own audio. Discord has its own ping. Chrome tabs can emit notification sounds. These aren't governed by the alert volume slider at all — they play at whatever volume the app outputs, which is controlled only by the master slider.

Per-app control over notification sources

SoundDial solves this by giving every app its own volume slider. Since notification sounds come from specific apps, lowering that app's volume lowers its notifications too.

Practical setups

  • Slack: 15% — subtle ping, not a startling interruption
  • Messages: 20% — audible but gentle
  • Mail: muted — check on your own schedule
  • Calendar: 25% — just enough to notice
  • Discord: 10% — background awareness without the blast
  • Music / browser: 70-100% — full enjoyment, undisturbed

The result: your media plays at the level you want, and notification sources sit at a level that informs without startling. No Do Not Disturb required — you still hear everything, just at volumes that make sense.

Combine with profiles

Save a "Focus" profile with most notification apps muted and a "Normal" profile with gentle levels. Switch with one click when you need deep concentration versus passive awareness. No more choosing between "hear everything at full blast" and "hear nothing at all."
