Siri can set a timer on your Mac with a voice command, and it works — when you are alone. In a shared office, a library, or a quiet bedroom at midnight, asking your laptop to "set a timer for 10 minutes" out loud is not practical. You need a way to start a timer silently, without opening a full app or a browser tab.
Plenty of people have Siri disabled entirely for privacy or preference reasons. For them, macOS offers almost no quick timer option at all.
The non-Siri options on macOS
Without Siri, you can open the Clock app, switch to the Timer tab, scroll the hour and minute wheels, and press Start. It works but it is slow — four steps and a window you have to close afterward. You can set a calendar event with an alert, but that is even more steps. Web timers work in a pinch, but they depend on keeping the tab open and unmuted.
Terminal users sometimes run sleep 600 && say "done" in a shell, which is clever but requires typing an exact number of seconds and keeping the terminal window open. None of these feel like a real timer experience.
