Apple's newer MacBook Pro models (14" and 16") have remarkably powerful speakers for a laptop. So powerful that moderate volume levels can be genuinely loud — especially in a quiet room, late at night, or with headphones. The gap between "comfortable" and "too much" is sometimes just one or two volume steps.
Why the volume steps feel too coarse
macOS has 16 volume steps via the keyboard. Each step is about 6.25% of the total range. On powerful speakers or sensitive headphones, a single step can represent a significant perceived volume change — going from "perfect" to "too loud" with one tap of the volume key.
Built-in fix: quarter-step volume
Hold Option + Shift and press volume up/down. Each press adjusts by one quarter of a normal step, giving you 64 levels instead of 16. This 4x finer control makes it much easier to find the exact right volume, especially with powerful speakers or headphones.
This is the single most useful Mac audio trick that most people don't know about.
The deeper problem: one slider for everything
Even with 64 levels, you still have one slider controlling every app. If you set the volume low enough for comfortable notification sounds, your music might be too quiet. If you set it for music, a notification ping might make you jump.
The real issue is that different audio sources need different volumes. Notifications should be subtle. Music should be present. Calls should be clear. Browser video should be moderate. One slider can't serve all of these well.
Per-app volume for precise control
SoundDial gives each app its own volume slider with 1% increments from 0% to 200%. That's 200 levels of precision per app, compared to macOS's 16 (or 64 with the modifier) system-wide steps.
Set your system volume to a moderate base level (50-60%), then use SoundDial to fine-tune each app:
- Spotify: 35% — comfortable background level
- Slack: 12% — subtle notification ping
- Zoom: 85% — clear call audio without being overwhelming
- Safari: 45% — moderate video playback
This way, no single audio source is ever "too loud." Each one is tuned to its ideal level independently. A Slack ping at 12% is barely noticeable, while your Zoom call at 85% is crystal clear — all at the same system volume setting.
